In our office, liposuction is performed entirely under local tumescent anesthesia, an extremely diluted numbing solution. This allows patients to stand in order to better judge contour and symmetry during the procedure. As we know all too well, our bodies look much better lying down than standing up. Patients receive IV replacement fluids only, no drugs. Valium by mouth is permitted if patients so desire.
At the end, patients are fitted into a very snug liposuction garment which they keep on for a few weeks. Showers are permitted within 2 days.
Ultrasound assisted liposuction (UAL) allows for faster fat removal. It is especially helpful in hard to suction fibrous areas such as the back and male breasts and love handles. Unfortunately, UAL is associated with an increased risk of accidental internal burns and skin sloughs.
SmartLipo utilizes a laser beam through a thin canula to melt the fat. This technique causes slightly less blood loss and adds significant time and expense to the procedure. The FDA approved this device in 2006 on the basis of it being equivalent to existing procedures, not because it was safer or better.
